poetry blossoms in Asian Istanbul!

In the next days two major events will take place on the Asian side of Istanbul:

The first is a literature festival hosted by the historical Haydarpasa train station, hosting poets Ataol Behramoglu, Onur Caymaz, Onur Behramoglu, Haydar Ergulen, and others, between 1 and 5 June… the program is here http://www.kadikoy.bel.tr/documents/file/1_Kitap%20gunleri_brosur.pdf

The second event is the Atasehir “Nazim Hikmet International Poetry Days”, directed by Ergulen, with the participation of poets Ahmet Telli (guest of honour) and Enver Ercan, Baki Ayhan , Metin Cengiz,  Cenk Gündoğdu,  Sina Akyol, Tozan Alkan, and Arife Kalender, among others. Varlık commemorates Orhan Veli and Oktay Rıfat

The latest issue of Varlık dergisi is dedicated to two of the greatest names of poetry in Turkish: Orhan Veli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orhan_Veli_Kan%C4%B1k) and Oktay Rıfat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktay_R%C4%B1fat_Horozcu), both born in 1914. Poets and critics (Tozan Alkan, Enis Batur, Ataol Behramoğlu, Ömer Erdem, Mustafa Günay, Yücel Kayıran, Nilay Özer, and Murat Yalçın) discuss the two poets’ literary activities, and the impact of their voice in the Turkish poetry panorama…enjoy the reading!

Turkish Poets and Their Readers: Yasakmeyve 65

The theme of the new issue (n.65, November/December) of the periodical Yasakmeyve is ‘The poets and their readers’. küçük İskender is the focus of this issue; Gonca Özmen, Metin Celâl, Sennur Sezer, Cenk Gündoğdu, Sina Akyol, Tahir Abacı,Tozan Alkan and many others are also participating. The issue is accompanied by the “Türkiye Şiir Rehberi”, a guide to the poetry written in Ankara. Enjoy the reading!

The Gezi Park Library’s still alive!!!

In my last post there was a picture of half-devastated Gezi Park Library, the library shared by all the protesters in Taksim…I am happy that Yitik Ülke Yayınları, the Turkish Writers’ Union and, among others, poets Kadir Aydemir and Tozan Alkan are working to keep this wonderful experience alive! go on guys!

New issue of “Varlık Dergisi”: Nazim Hikmet and Trieste!

The June issue of the literary journal Varlık Dergisi is dedicated to Nazım Hikmet in the 50th anniversary of his death. I am also very happy to announce that my friend poet Tozan Alkan has published in the journal an account of his stay in Trieste, while we were guests of the “Castello di Duino” poetry prize… enjoy the reading!!!

“Şiirsaati”/ “L’ora della poesia”/ “The Hour of Poetry”

It has just been published the new issue of “Şiirsaati”, a literary journal that offers on the cover page a “Letter to a Young Poet” (“Genç bir Şaire Mektup”) by Enis Batur, the poet whose carreer I have studied for my Master’s thesis. Plus, a poem by my dear Tozan Alkan, an interview with Haydar Ergülen, and essays by, among others, Arife Kalender and Gültekin Emre, two very interesting authors. Enjoy!
